It's time for another round of WCDO Athlete of the Week awards presented by Waste Recovery Enterprises in Sidney!

This week's winners are Jossy Rathbun from Cherry Valley-Springfield Track & Field, a standout 400-meter hurdler who earned Tri-Valley League and Section 4 All-Star honors in 2024, 2025 and 2026 while also qualifying for the New York State Meet in the pentathlon.

Also recognized is Bailey Thayer from Cherry Valley-Springfield Softball. The sophomore was named 3rd Team All-State after striking out 155 batters this season while also hitting 485 with six home runs at the plate.

And congratulations to Allen Osborne from Schenevus/Charlotte Valley Baseball. Allen helped lead his team to Tri-Valley League and Section IV Class-D championships plus a win in the New York State sub-regional. Coach Jim Gaske described his season as "extremely focused."

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 58 year old Christine McGraw of Gilboa & 45 year old Leon Grizzard of Stamford following an investigation into burglaries at the Delaware County Electric Coop & neighboring properties, Deputies viewed surveillance video, identified the suspects, they conducted a traffic stop in Grand Gorge, 2 weeks later; the operator was McGraw, who was wanted by State Police, the passenger was Grizzard, who was wanted by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, they were taken into custody, Deputies located crack cocaine from both suspects, the pair face a variety of drug & Burglary charges, Grizzard was arraigned & was held without bail. Last month, Deputies located another burglary suspect, 23 year old Gage Johnson, of Grand Gorge, who was charged with False Personation, Obstruction of Governmental Administration, 2nd & 3rd degree Burglary, & several lesser charges, he was arraigned & was held without bail. More charges & arrests are anticipated.
Chenango County Public Health and the State Department of Health have confirmed a case of measles in a Chenango County resident. The unvaccinated individual is recovering at home, the risk to the general public is considered low. Public health staff are working to identify and notify anyone who may have had close contact with the individual during the infectious period. Any individuals identified as having a potential exposure will be contacted directly with guidance and recommendations. At this time, there is no indication of ongoing community transmission. State DEC & State Department of Health issued an updated Air Quality Health Advisory for fine particulate matter for Today, due to the statewide impact of smoke from wildfires in Canada. New Yorkers may see visible smoke and hazy skies across the state and spikes in smoke-related pollution. The updated advisory for the Eastern Lake Ontario, Central New York and Western New York regions are forecast to reach Very Unhealthy status, through midnight tonight. More information regarding the Canadian wildfire smoke can be found at airnow.gov.
The Final Report from the National Transportation Safety Board has been released regarding a 2024 plane crash in Delaware County. The report said that the accident was likely due to the pilot; 76 year old Roger Beggs who had spatial disorientation while flying in poor weather conditions, the single-engine, Piper Malibu crashed on June 30, 2024, near Trout Creek, 12 minutes after taking off from the Albert S. Nader Regional Airport in Oneonta, on its way to Yeager Airport in Charleston, West Virginia. State Police identified the victims of the crash as Roger Beggs, his daughter Laura VanEpps, and her husband, Ryan VanEpps, and their children James and Harrison VanEpps.

The National Weather Service has an Air Quality Alert in effect, due to lingering Canadian Wildfires, local Meteorologist Rich Townsend explains:

The Alert will remain in effect until midnight tonight, We'll have the updated Tri County Forecast at the end of this newscast.
A Delaware County Grand Jury returned a 9-count indictment against 24 year old Donovan Connelly of Walton, for 6 counts of Sexual Abuse, for the alleged sexual abuse of a 17 year female co-worker while working in a position of authority. Other counts charge Connelly with Criminal Obstruction of Breathing, 2 counts of Stalking. Connelly was issued a criminal order of protection, which he violated, which led to a charge of Criminal Contempt. The investigation is continuing, anyone with additional information should contact the Walton Police Department at 607-865-5400.
